Music Performance - European Jazz Master

The Master’s in European Jazz Master (EUJAM) is a two-year programme and specialisation option within the Master's programme Music Performance, which is operated jointly with leading music academies in Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and Trondheim. The programme is aimed at elite jazz musicians and composers. It includes compulsory semesters abroad, and is designed to further qualify you for the employment market by giving you a strong personal network among the leading European jazz musicians of the future. You acquire first-hand knowledge of educational cultures and music scenes in the cities in the collaboration, and under the influence of the teachers you encounter in the various educational institutions, you also acquire a broad education on your instrument.

You must either have passed the Bachelor programme Music Performance at RMC, or possess a relevant bachelor’s degree from another Danish or foreign academy of music. The Conservatory may accept other similar artistic based bachelor's degrees in music as a qualification for entrance examination.

Please note that only a limited number of students can be admitted to the master’s programmes at the Conservatory each year, so the applicants will be selected on the basis of abilities and skills.

You will be requested to answer the following questions:

  • Please select your main instrument. It requires a special permission to do your entrance examination on an instrument other than bass, guitar, piano, organ, percussion, vocal, saxophone, trombone, drums, trumpet, vibraphone, violin, or electronics.
  • What are your artistic goals/visions? (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • What skills do you think you need to develop in order to achieve your goals? (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • What knowledge do you consider necessary in order to achieve your goals? And how would you work on developing you knowledge? (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • Please give 2-3 examples of projects (subject/content, project type) that you would consider to work on during the programme? (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • Personal portfolio – written description: Please give a brief written description of your reflections related to the uploaded music.(max. 1000 keystrokes)

You will be asked to upload the following:

  • Personal portfolio – music: Please upload 2-3 music examples of projects, for which you have been artistically responsible, and which you believe represent you as a creative and performing musician. (total duration of the music examples: 10-15 minutes) Submission format: MP3
  • Please upload a list of credits with precise specification of your own role and, if applicable, the role of any others in relation to the 2-3 musical projects. Submission format: PDF

Other submitted material will not be included in the assessment.

Entrance examination

Who is selected for the entrance examination?

All applicants who meet the admission requirements will be invited to attend an entrance examination.

If you have completed a relevant Danish or foreign bachelor’s programme in music, which does not provide direct admission, your application will be assessed individually. If approved, you will be further assessed by means of an entrance examination. As a general rule, the more closely related the bachelor’s degree is to the master’s programme applied for, the better the chances of being admitted.

Form and content of the entrance examination

The entrance examination consists of a concert and an interview.

  • Concert
    You perform a self-selected repertoire on your main instrument with a group of your own choice (at least one other person, who sings or plays an instrument). The repertoire must include material composed and/or arranged by yourself.
    Duration: 10 minutes, including any changeovers.
  • Interview
    An interview with a panel of two assessors on the basis of your concert, personal portfolio and written application. The interview must be in English. You will be interviewed on your own. 
    Duration: 10 minutes.

The three components of the entrance examination (concert, interview and personal portfolio) will be assessed as a whole by the panel. Emphasis will be placed on your artistic and academic standard, and your study project plan.



After the entrance examination, the Conservatory will decide whom to admit. The selection is based on the results achieved at the entrance examination, and the requirements of the music business. Due to the limited number of study places, the conservatory cannot guarantee that all qualified applicants will be admitted.


A small number of applicants qualified for admission but unsuccessful due to a limited number of places available, may be offered a place on a waiting list. Applicants on the waiting list may be offered admission no later than 1 June.


Illness must be documented by medical certificate if you wish to have the opportunity to take a make-up examination. The medical certificate must be provided no later than three days after the examination date. The Conservatory will determine the date of any make-up examination, and you will be notified of this as soon as possible. It will not be possible to take the make-up examination at any other time than that set by RMC. You are responsible for paying the cost of the medical certificate.


The entrance examination is carried out in English only. 

Programme structure

The Master’s programme corresponds to 120 ECTS points, equivalent to two years of full-time study at 1,620 hours per year. A year of full-time study includes all work connected with the studies, including classes, independent study, examinations and all other study-related activities.

The Master’s programme comprises studies at an advanced level, and has its emphasis on in-depth study, individual options and innovation, with the aim of strengthening your artistic profile.

The programme is operated by RMC in partnership with:

  • Jazz-Institut Berlin
  • Conservatorium van Amsterdam
  • Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris
  • The jazz programme at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

The programme consists of four semesters, of which the first and last semester is at RMC. You will be studying at a partner institution the two other semesters:

1st semester at RMC
2nd semester at partner institution 1
3rd semester at partner institution 2
4th semester at RMC

Based on a motivated application, it is decided at which partner institutions you will studying.

You follow the subjects and project courses offered at each institution, and thereby participates on an equal footing with the local students in the two semesters abroad. The subject areas vary from institution to institution, but ensemble playing, composition and electives are included in all of them.

Each semester, one of the partner institutions take turns hosting a joint intensive course, where all EUJAM students gather for a week. In these courses, the students work on ensemble playing in groups formed across the institutions. The students' personal projects are presented and discussed, and the host institution organises workshops with local teachers.

To a large extent, the programme content takes the form of independent project work, which allows you to organise the process yourself within a set framework - in dialog with your teacher. The programme offers many opportunities to draw on the many strong academic environments and professional networks that the five partner institutions offer in combination.

The programme concludes with a self-defined Master’s project within the subject of Music Performance, which results in a recorded work (digitally uploaded), a public concert and a written report, in which the you presents your reflections on the project.

The programme is a full-time programme of study, and attendance at tuition is compulsory. The language of instruction is English.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the programme typically find employment in Denmark and internationally as musicians in bands, as well as in the context of television, radio, theatre, film, etc. During their studies, graduates will have established strong professional networks in at least three of Europe's most important jazz cities, and will thus be well placed to establish a sustainable career on the international jazz scene. In the curriculum, you can read more about the qualifications of graduate musicians.

RMC prioritizes diversity in terms of genre and fields of expertise when the entire group of teachers is composed.

As a student, you are offered a wide spectrum of professional impulses from permanent teaching staff as well as from contract and external teachers.

Within the core subjects of the programme, the teaching performed by the permanent staff will normally not exceed more than two thirds of the total number of teaching hours.

In relation to special courses, projects and similar activities, you will have the opportunity to meet a large number of external teachers.

Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) is an educational institution under the Danish Ministry of Culture and works on a non-commercial basis. RMC was founded in 1986 as the first music academy in Europe to specialize in contemporary rhythmic music.
