Music Management

Music Management is a study programme for people who are passionate about being part of the music industry of the future. Music Management qualifies the student to work in management, development and operations in the music industry, and in related areas of the experience and cultural industries. The study programme is interdisciplinary and combines theory and practice in the interface between social studies and the arts. Guest teachers and internship help to strengthen the student’s networks, both in Denmark and abroad, and the study environment at RMC itself offers fruitful interdisciplinary relationships across the boundaries of the Conservatory’s various study programmes.

Application

WHO CAN APPLY?

You must have concluded an upper secondary school leaving examination (stx), a higher preparatory examination (hf), a higher commercial examination programme (hhx), a higher business examination programme (eux) or a higher technical examination programme (htx), or be able to document an equivalent, concluded study programme abroad. No exemptions will be made from these requirements. 
If you haven't passed your upper secondary education yet, you must submit documentation from your school stating that you will pass the secondary education before start of study.
If you already have a degree from another further education (i.e. university), you must still upload your leaving certificat from upper secondary school, as it is qualifying.

The entrance examination at RMC is not coordinated with programmes at other academies of music. You are welcome to apply to several academies.
You can apply for several programmes at RMC simultaneously, but the entrance examinations are not coordinated.

You must create a profile, fill in the online application form and upload relevant files. 

WHAT SHOULD THE APPLICATION CONTAIN?

In the application form you will be asked to answer the following questions:

  • What is your motivation for applying for the Music Management programme? (Max 1000 keystrokes)
     
  • Where do you see your professional life in 5 years? (Max 1000 keystrokes)
     
  • Discuss a relevant challenge in the music business. (Max 2400 keystrokes)
     
  • Additional comments (optional). (Max 500 keystrokes)
     
  • List and describe your 4 most important music business relevant job experiences (Max 400 keystrokes per experience)

In the application form you will be asked to upload the following:

  • Copy of qualifying examination diploma (see above). 
    The certified documentation must be in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish or English.

Other enclosures will not be considered in the assessment.

APPLICATION FEE

Applicants for a bachelor programme at RMC must pay an application fee of 500 DKK. The fee covers part of the costs associated with the entrance examination and is non-refundable after the application deadline.

DEADLINE 

The deadline for applications is 1 December at 12:00 CET. If this date is a Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday, the deadline will be at 12:00 CET on the next weekday.

WHO IS SELECTED FOR THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION?

All who apply for admission to the Bachelor programme Music Management, will have their applications assessed at the first round of the entrance examination.

FORM AND CONTENT OF THE EXAMINATION

The entrance examination is in two rounds:

1st round is an assessment of the written application.

2nd round consists of a bound assignment, followed by a presentation of your solution, a presentation of a project of your own choosing as well as an interview.

1ST ROUND

At the 1st round of the entrance examination, an assessment panel will assess the written application.

You are not present.

In assessing the application, the panel will consider:

  • Your ability to reflect and express yourself in writing.
  • Your general familiarity with the music industry.
  • Your experience in developing and/or managing projects within the music industry or related industries.
  • Your motivation for applying.

No emphasis will be placed on whether or not you can play an instrument. The programme does not aim towards educating musicians in managing their own careers.

The assessment panel consists of three examiners. 

You will be assessed according to a 100 point scale, which is a subdivision of the Danish 7 step grading scale. A minimum of 40 points, corresponding to 02 in the Danish 7 step grading scale, is required to pass the entrance examination.

The assessment is given, related to the level required to commence the programme.

SELECTION AFTER 1ST ROUND

Based on the assessment, a number of applicants are selected to advance to the 2nd round of the entrance examination.

It is a requirement that you pass the 1st round, to advance to the 2nd round.

All applicants who do not advance to the second round are offered a brief, five-minute telephone conversation with the responsible internal examiner, who will elaborate on the assessment result on the basis of the assessment criteria used.

2ND ROUND - BOUND ASSIGNMENT, presentation & INTERVIEW

The 2nd round of the entrance examination falls in three parts:

  • Bound assignment
    • You will choose between two bound assignments, which you are to solve. The assignment will be based on a realistic scenario from the music business and will be solved in an assigned room.
      Duration: 30 minutes.
    • Afterwards you present your solution to the bound assignment.
      Duration: 5 minutes.
  • Presentation of own project
    • You will present a music business relevant project that you have worked on in the past. The presentation will be prepared at home and may involve visual presentation (powerpoint, whiteboard etc.).
      Duration: 5 minutes.
  • Interview
    • The interview is based on the written application, your solution to the bound assignment as well as the presentation of your own project. You will be given the opportunity to expand on and put your professional goals into perspective as well as your motivation for applying.
      Duration: 10 minutes.

The bound assingment is to be solved individually. Presentations and interview will be conducted before a panel consisting of three examiners. You are not allowed to bring other persons to the entrance examination.

ASSESSMENT OF THE 2ND ROUND

After the 2nd round, an overall assessment of your presentations and the interview is undertaken.

In the assessment, emphasis is placed on:

  • Your professional competences, including your skills in idea development and innovation.
  • Your ability to reflect.
  • Your ability to develop and realise projects in the music business, both individually and with others.
  • Your visions for your future professional life as well as your motivation for applying.

You will be assessed according to a 100 point scale, which is a subdivision of the Danish 7 step grading scale. A minimum of 40 points, corresponding to 02 in the Danish 7 step grading scale, is required to pass the audition.

The assessment is given, related to the level that is required to commence the programme.

AFTER THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

ADMISSION

Following the second round of the entrance examination, a number of applicants are selected for admission. The selection is made on the basis of the results obtained in the first and second rounds. The selection process will also take into account the requirements of the music business.

Normally, seven students are admitted to the programme. Due to the limited number of study places available, the RMC may reject some applicants even if they have passed the entrance examination.

Applicants will receive an e-mail informing them of whether or not they have been admitted.

All applicants who are not admitted will be offered a brief, eight-minute telephone conversation with the responsible internal examiner, who will elaborate on the assessment result on the basis of the assessment criteria used.

WAITING LIST

A limited number of applicants who are qualified for admission, but who have not been admitted due to a lack of places available, may be offered a place on a waiting list. In the period up to 1 June, applicants on the waiting list may be offered admission.

ILLNESS IN CONNECTION WITH THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Illness must be documented by medical certificate if you wish to have the opportunity to take a make-up examination. The medical certificate must be provided no later than three days after the examination date. The Conservatory will determine the date of any make-up examination, and you will be notified of this as soon as possible. It will not be possible to take the make-up examination at any other time than that set by RMC. You are responsible for paying the cost of the medical certificate.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION LANGUAGE

The entrance examination is normally conducted in Danish. In cases where the applicant does not speak or understand Danish, the examination is carried out in English.

Programme structure

The Bachelor programme corresponds to 180 ECTS points, equivalent to three years of full-time study at 1,620 hours per year. A year of full-time study includes all work connected with the studies, including classes, independent study, examinations and all other study-related activities.

The programme consists of a range of subjects which in combination will prepare you for a career in the music industry, including general social science and humanities disciplines such as economics, law and communication, together with professionally-oriented studies.

The teaching varies between dialogue-based lectures, group work, projects and internships with guidance, written assignments, seminars and company visits. The teaching is mainly provided within a particular year group; however, subjects and projects may also be provided in classes made up of students drawn from various years and/or study programmes.

The study programme concludes with a Bachelor project, in which you analyse a self-chosen issue of relevance to the music industry.

The programme has built up an international network of companies in the music industry, ranging from small, one-man businesses to major multinational corporations. As a student, you are given access to this network, which will provide you with many benefits both during your studies and in relation to your future career choices. The network also helps to ensure that the programme is always up to date in relation to trends in the industry. In the ordinary teaching, guest lecturers from the music industry are often involved.

The programme is a full-time programme of study, and attendance at tuition is compulsory. The language of instruction is usually Danish, but teachers may provide teaching in English to individuals or small groups as necessary. Teaching given by guest teachers, or in connection with study tours, is however typically provided in English.

On completing the programme, Music Managers will have acquired insight into the fields of the music industry and its activities, production conditions and methods, and will have gained practical work experience in selected areas of the music business or related industries. Graduates of the programme will possess knowledge of the fundamental financial, legal and managerial conditions of the business, as well as its environmental and framework conditions. In addition, graduates of the Music Management programme will possess insight into the history of music, genres and styles, the interaction between music, culture and society, and the artistic expression, creative processes, theoretical concepts and terminologies of music. The bachelor programme allows you to continue your studies at a Masters level on another educational institution. RMC does not offer the Music Management programme on a Masters level.

Career opportunities

The Music Management programme qualifies graduates for a variety of jobs within the music industry, for example with music companies, booking agencies, management companies, festivals, venues, media and internet companies, as well as similar jobs in related areas of the experience and culture industries. The employment opportunities depend on both market fluctuations in the business and on the priorities of cultural policy, and may therefore vary.

What’s your job now?
I work as an A&R at Warner Music Denmark.

Why did you choose to study Music Management?
I had been working in the music industry for some years and could not see myself doing anything else. I really had a hard time seeing myself continue studying and I could just not find a school or an education that felt right to me. However, when my attention was drawn to Music Management, the thought of studying started to make sense to me.

What’s a typical working day for you?
I spend most of my time in dialogue with both artists, producers/songwriters, managers, publishers, and bookers. I must disperse my time and energy as well as I can between the artists I already work with and the artists I do not work with yet. Of course, I also listen to a lot of music. I think the dialogue about music is important and I always try to give constructive feedback – even if it is artists, I do not work with every day. Although it is a very flexible and dynamic job, I have office hours from 9-17 as most others, but when working with creative individuals, one cannot count on the fixed hours of work. The phone is ringing on Sunday evening, and sometimes you must be at Rust at 2 a.m. Friday night with a bottle of water.

What was the most important thing you got from the education?
The people I have met, without a doubt. They have made my world much bigger and that is perhaps one of the most valuable things one can experience.

Where are your fellow students today?
We are a mix of bookers, managers, producers, and label entrepreneurs. Everyone is still in the music industry, so we can hardly avoid each other.

Theodor Clausen, GRADUATED 2017

What’s your job now?
I am a promoter and concert organizer at Live Nation, where my daily work consists of booking and setting up concerts with international artists in Denmark.

What’s a typical working day for you?
Hectic ... but fun. We set up +400 concerts a year at a wide range of venues and festivals, so there is a lot of communication with international booking agents, venues, festivals and many other stakeholders. I have regular office hours during the day and 1-2 concerts a week in the evening hours. In addition, there are various trips abroad and festivals, where networks and new artists are cultivated.

What was the most important thing you got from the programme?
The network and friendships of the other students, those from the other programmes as well. Furthermore, I can thank my internship at Roskilde Festival for what I do today.

Do you use the professional competences you got in your current work?
Definitely. Especially law, project management and finance. Furthermore, the music industry studies is a good way to gain a greater understanding of how the different players in the Danish music industry are working.

Where are your fellow students today?
Everything from PR, management, venues, musicians and anything else.

What’s your job now?
I work freelance and travel a lot both in Denmark and abroad, partly as a consultant/teacher and partly with my band Nelson Can. All the while I am finishing my Master’s degree in Management of Creative Business Processes at Copenhagen Business School – it is a very nice programme to build upon Music Management for those who want a Master’s degree as well.

Why did you choose to study Music Management?
I had dreamed of it ever since I went to high school. I knew that I wanted to work in music or other creative businesses and that my strengths were in the administrative part of it. It just took me many years to gather the courage to apply, and today I think it was great that I had some years of experience before I was admitted because it made it easier for me to put things in perspective and get the full benefit of the education.

What was the most important thing you got from the programme?
My classmates and the unity we had and still have has been completely invaluable to me. You obviously learn a lot of incredibly important things and you get a fantastic big network, but your classmates is in my view the greatest resource you get. If you cannot work as a part of a group community and be a team player, you should choose another education.

Do you use the professional competences you got in your current work?
All the time. I use all the knowledge I acquired almost daily. The level was sky-high. So high that it has made the Master's programme feel very manageable.

Did you know how you would use your degree?
No, not exactly. And I don't think there's anything wrong with still being investigating when you apply. Forget the career plans for a moment and get your head filled with as much knowledge as possible. The big decisions can come afterwards.

What’s your job now?
I am Label Manager for New Amsterdam Records in New York, which publishes new composed music that moves beyond and between existing genres. We are also involved in live music activities, educational initiatives, and podcasts.

What’s a typical working day for you?
My everyday life is at one time very varied and routine; many of the same tasks must be solved for each release, but at the same time, each artist and each project is so different that it never gets boring. I spend a lot of time on emails, taking phone calls and meetings, with both artists, colleagues, and business partners, and some time on practical tasks. In addition, I spend a lot of time listening to submissions, and I go to many concerts, both with our own artists and with artists or projects that we are interested in signing or collaborating with in other ways. It is a relatively small organization, and I often have many hats on, at one time.

What was the most important thing you got from the programme?
I got many specific tools in subjects I did not know much about before, such as law, economics, and strategy. In addition, I learned to put words and structure on some work processes that I already worked with, such as project management and marketing. Especially, I gained a greater knowledge of the industry and the mechanisms behind the music, and I expanded and strengthened my network tremendously through subjects as music industry studies, study trips, internships, and various projects.

Did you know how you would use your degree?
I did not know exactly what I wanted after graduating when I started, but I always knew that I would work with the music and art that is out of the mainstream. A couple of my fellow students had a very clear course for where they were going before we started – I spent the three years at the conservatory to try out different things, which I got incredibly much out of.

How do you see the future of the music industry?
There is so much talent and so many good ideas out there, and I find it exciting to follow and contribute to new concepts and forms of releases, concerts, marketing, partnerships, and so forth, that push the development of the industry. At the same time, I can be concerned about the living conditions for the non-commercial music in an industry that is moving faster and faster, but an important thing I have learned at my current work is that there is an audience for all art – you just have to find it.

RMC prioritizes diversity in terms of genre and fields of expertise when the entire group of teachers is composed.

As a student, you are offered a wide spectrum of professional impulses from permanent teaching staff as well as from contract and external teachers.

Within the core subjects of the programme, the teaching performed by the permanent staff will normally not exceed more than two thirds of the total number of teaching hours.

In relation to special courses, projects and similar activities, you will have the opportunity to meet a large number of external teachers.
